In the previous guest episode, we heard how one entrepreneur created her business by turning a beauty industry negative into a positive, making her product a win-win for customers and practitioners alike. Who would have thought that something like a beautifying, self-care ritual of having a gel manicure could damage your skin?
Candice Quinn, founder of MANISAFE, discovered it could, and dared to broach the subject. Her MANISAFE manicure gloves protect hands from the harmful rays of UV lamps. But even so, the industry was not keen to acknowledge the science-backed evidence and accept the need for change.
In this Green Beauty opinion, Formula Botanica CEO and podcast host Lorraine Dallmeier takes Candice’s experience as an example of the kind of resistance to change that both consumers and the natural skincare formulation community face from the established beauty industry.

MANISAFE is just one example of this in action, but Lorraine mentions another, closer to home. Formula Botanica is proud to say that “everyone can formulate” and that you simply don’t need to be a qualified cosmetic chemist to create safe, effective natural cosmetics. However, this is not music to the mainstream industry’s ears.
Yet, as Formula Botanica graduates have proved time and again, there are plenty of niches in the beauty industry that natural formulation serves just as well, and better, with its reliance on natural and botanical ingredients. Our graduates’ brands are pioneers, whether in serving their customers’ needs more closely or in adopting eco-beauty practices. One beauty entrepreneur at a time, we are seeing more and more Candice Quinns dare to find solutions to problems the industry won’t even admit to.
Join Lorraine in this episode as she celebrates indie beauty’s entrepreneurial mindset, which is not only finding gaps in the market to improve products and services but also pioneering solutions that make sense to consumers like you and me.
