This week we’re blogging every day to celebrate Organic Beauty Week and all things to do with organic beauty. Today we’re going to look at the boom that the global organic cosmetic market is currently experiencing, which we think is VERY exciting!
The global market for organic personal care (that’s skincare, haircare, oral care and cosmetics to you) is currently worth $8.2 billion. But because customers are now increasingly learning about the benefits of using organic cosmetics, experts are predicting that the value of the industry will almost double to $15.98 billion by 2020.
That’s only 6 years from now.
Many of those sales will be driven by product innovation, especially in the field of herbal extracts, antioxidants and exfoliants. The main growth is predicted in Europe, North America and Asia Pacific (particularly Japan) where people are arming themselves with the facts and moving away from conventional skincare products packed full of cheap fillers, animal by-products and harsh chemicals.
This study confirms what we’ve been saying at Formula Botanica for years – organic skincare is the future. There has never been a better time to set up your own organic skincare business.
But closer to home (for us in the UK!) the results also speak for themselves. The Soil Association calculates that UK sales of certified organic health and beauty products increased by 17% in 2013, to £37.2 million. And that’s just the organic health and beauty products which are certified. If you would take this wider and look at personal care products which contain organic ingredients and don’t carry the Soil Association’s stamp of approval, you would see larger growth still.
Customers are becoming increasingly aware of how many potentially harmful synthetics are in modern skincare products. The organic and natural sector is the fastest growing sector of the global beauty industry and with $160 billion spent worldwide each year on cosmetics, skincare and treatments, the time is ripe to blow the synthetic cosmetic competition out of the water.
