Most indie beauty brands launch with a Shopify store, post a few times on Instagram, and then wait for the sales to come.
Spoiler alert: they don’t. The brands that actually make direct-to-consumer selling work are doing something structurally different — and from the outside, it is almost impossible to see what that is.
In this episode of Green Beauty Conversations, Lorraine Dallmeier talks to Line Pevik, Head of Brand at Frøya Organics, a Norwegian skincare and haircare brand built on Arctic botanicals, waterless formulations, and beeswax that has now sold over a million jars directly to customers across the US, Europe, the UK, and Australia.
The conversation covers the retargeting strategy that follows potential customers around the internet until they buy, the before-and-after content system that doubles as a 60-day money-back guarantee mechanism, and what it actually takes to scale production when demand goes global.
If you are building a beauty brand and wondering why your online sales are not where you want them to be, this episode shows you exactly what the gap looks like.
“People can sense if it’s genuine or not. Stay true to yourself and your story.” — Line Pevik, Frøya Organics
In this episode with Line Pevik, you will hear:
- What Frøya Organics makes and who it is for. Frøya is a Norwegian skincare and haircare brand with a range of around 18 products centred on balms. The formulas are waterless, free of synthetic chemicals, and built on beeswax and Arctic botanicals — sea buckthorn, arnica, calendula, juniper, borage, chamomile, and rose hip. The golden colour of Frøya’s balms comes directly from the sea buckthorn, not added colour — something that will resonate immediately with any formulator who knows the ingredient.
- How the brand got started. Frøya was founded by Tobias and Daniel, who grew up with Line in the same Norwegian town. The brand began as a search for natural solutions to one founder’s acne, which led them to Arctic botanicals and eventually to a much broader range of skin concerns. Line joined after leaving journalism and city life for a farm, drawn in by values she already held. The brand now employs more than fifty people, with team members based across multiple countries.
- The direct-to-consumer model and what makes it work. Frøya sells through its own website and recently opened on Amazon. Line is clear that a good product is the starting point, but what drives conversion is a combination of brand story, persistent paid social, and constant testing. The Norwegian and Scandinavian lifestyle framing has been an asset internationally. Reaching a customer typically takes between two and fifteen touchpoints — and the brand’s response to increasing consumer scepticism online has been heavy investment in education rather than harder selling.
- The before-and-after system and the 60-day guarantee. Frøya offers a 60-day money-back guarantee, and the guarantee mechanism is what generates the before-and-after content the brand uses across its marketing. Customers are encouraged to photograph their skin when they start, and to submit an after photo if they want to claim the guarantee. Line’s view is that skincare results take time, and the 60-day window is deliberately set to give the products a proper chance to work.
- A good product is necessary but not sufficient for direct-to-consumer success. Line is direct about this. Frøya has a strong product and a compelling origin story, and both matter. But what converts browsers into buyers is a paid social infrastructure that tests constantly, adapts to changing algorithms, and follows potential customers across platforms until they are ready to buy. Brands that post occasionally and hope for organic traction are, in her words, doing something completely different from what Frøya does.
