Podcast 142: Why 2023 is your year to formulate change

2023 Year to formulate change

In this first Green Beauty Conversations of 2023, podcast host and Formula Botanica CEO Lorraine Dallmeier and all the school team wish you a healthy, happy, prosperous year. The start of the year is always an exciting time as we anticipate, envisage and make plans for the next 12 months.

Lorraine dives right in to this topic, throwing down some challenges. She asks what plans you have to change your life for the better this year and to make a positive impact on those around you. What formulation goals are you setting? Are you dreaming big and thinking of taking steps to start your own beauty brand this year? Whatever your plans, don’t let things beyond your control limit your horizons. Lorraine starts the year with an upbeat message for all of us in the indie beauty formulation community.

Lorraine acknowledges that right now, even the most optimistic among us may feel daunted by the world outside and beyond our control. There is no getting away from the fact that for many, times are hard and the economic picture is gloomy. But, in this Green Beauty Opinion, Lorraine is here to buoy you up, bolster your plans, and help you take the steps to realising your formulation and beauty brand goals of 2023.

Today’s climate may be unique to our times and own circumstances, but there are plenty of examples in the history of the beauty industry demonstrating that, out of adversity, some great and successful ideas and businesses are born.

Think of the multinational giant of the beauty industry, Procter & Gamble, which is now present in every country bar one and is synonymous with today’s half a trillion dollar beauty industry. This company was started by Procter, a candlemaker, and Gamble, a soapmaker, in the depths of the “1837 Panic” in the US, an economic depression that lasted almost a decade. Just 22 years later, they were turning $1 million in profit. If they had given in to economic adversity, Procter & Gamble would not have entered beauty history as one of the most successful 20th century personal care companies, nor would it employ 100,000 people.

From the power of P&G, Lorraine looks closer to home for examples of businesses launched in a climate of economic downturn. Formula Botanica graduates have proved that the road to success can start small with bootstrapped finance, and at any time.

Our graduate Sandra Velasquez from Nopalera launched in November 2020 during the Covid pandemic lockdown and has just celebrated the two-year anniversary of her bath and body line by raising $2.7 million in investment funding. With the right concept and a sense of purpose, as Sandra has, you too can start your own journey, regardless of the global economic situation. Read about Sandra’s brand mission and purpose to get a sense of how they are key to success. Our post on how to start a beauty business on a small budget has plenty more graduate brand stories.

Lorraine’s challenge to you in this episode, which sets the scene for the year ahead, is to give yourself the space to be happy. Don’t start 2023 by limiting your horizons. Instead, use your energy productively and positively to project where you will be at the end of 2023 if you take steps to change your life, whether that is learning to formulate or launching that beauty business. Start now, and when the economic upturn comes, you will be ready to grasp its opportunities to the full.
