Registration opens for our first conference!

Formula Botanica 2015 Conference

Formula Botanica is hosting its inaugural two-day conference for students & graduates on September 12-13 2015. This conference will be dedicated to learning about organic skincare formulation, skincare entrepreneurship and ingredients manufacturing. We will be bringing together students and graduates from all over the world to discuss the organic skincare industry, share ideas and learn from each other.

Venue: Bath Spa University, Bath, UK

Conference fee (Early-Bird Discount): £125 (until 30th of June 2015)

Conference fee (Full Price): £145

 

On Day 1 we will be listening to a number of excellent speakers who understand the organic skincare industry like no other. We will also be sampling ingredients together, running group discussions and watching a live demonstration.

On Day 2 all of the conference delegates will be heading to the Organic Herb Trading Company in Somerset to visit their wonderful 2-acre organic herb farm, meet their Managing Director and have a guided tour of their processing facilities.

We opened registration for the conference last week and have already filled many of the available places with our students and graduates – including a number of current students who will be flying in from other countries.


 

Speakers

Lorraine Dallmeier, Director of Formula Botanica

Lorraine DallmeierLorraine is the Director of Formula Botanica and a Biologist by training. She will be opening the conference by welcome all delegates and presenting on the current growth of the organic beauty industry around the world. Lorraine has been involved with Formula Botanica since 2012 and in the last year has grown the School’s student community from 300 to over 1000 students. She enjoys plant biology, botanical skincare science and digital entrepreneurship.

 

Amanda Barlow, Managing Director of Spiezia Organics

Amanda BarlowAmanda has been the Owner and MD of Spiezia Organics for 14 years. Spiezia Organics is a 100% organic skincare company in Cornwall and is well-known all throughout the organic skincare industry. The business has won multiple awards for its beautiful skincare products. Amanda has a wealth of knowledge about running an organic skincare business and we are very fortunate to welcome her to our conference!

 

 

Elham Eghbali, Associate Lecturer at Formula Botanica
Elham EghbaliElham is a Cosmetic Chemist and founder of Polymorphy Consulting and SkinChakra. Elham teaches our Certificates in Natural Cosmetic Preservation and Stability Testing. She is an artisan soap manufacturer, a supplier of cosmetic ingredients, an industry consultant and formulator and a tutor for almost 20 years. She runs workshops and seminars in her small cosmetics laboratory in Bavaria, Germany and elsewhere in the world for a broad range of participants from industry formulators to DIY laywomen. At the conference, Elham will be running a demonstration to show us how it’s all done!

 

Akua Wood, Owner of Sheabutter Cottage

Akua WoodAkua is the Owner of her own skincare brand Cioccolatina, as well as selling a great range of exotic oils, butters and other ingredients. Akua works with fair trade cooperatives throughout Africa to source her ingredients and believes strongly in empowering communities. She also believes in sourcing the finest quality ingredients and has a passion in particular for Shea butter, having experienced its nourishing and healing properties firsthand. We can’t wait to hear all about Akua’s experience in working with sustainable exotic ingredients!

 

Mike Brook, Managing Director of the Organic Herb Trading Company

Mike BrookMike Brook is the epitome of an organic pioneer. With a far-reaching vision and a passionate determination to develop lasting relationships with growers, Mike is a leader in the British organic herb community and has developed very efficient ways of growing herbs in the UK. He has inspired a steady trail of enthusiasts to learn from him. He started by supplying herbalists from his organic herb field in Oxfordshire and has transformed his business into supplying some of the leading organic food producers in the UK. Mike was the first person in the UK to import organic Chamomile, Ginger and Peppermint. We are very lucky to have Mike give us a personal tour around his 2-acre organic herb farm.

 


Conference Programme

Day 1

09:30 – Welcome & Refreshments

10:00 – Welcome Presentation – Lorraine Dallmeier, Director of Formula Botanica

Lorraine will welcome all conference attendees and present an overview of the global organic personal care market.

10:30 – Guest Speaker – Amanda Barlow, Managing Director of Spiezia Organics

Amanda has been running Spiezia Organics for 14 years. In this presentation, we are very fortunate that she will share her experience of running a well-known organic skincare business. Followed by Q&A.

11:30 – Demonstration – Elham Eghbali, Chief Saponification Officer at SkinChakra

Elham has 20-years experience as a Cosmetic Chemist and also teaches two of Formula Botanica’s expert Certificates. We get to watch Elham in action as she shows off her formulation skills. Followed by Q&A.

12:30 – Lunch

13:30 – Group Discussion – hosted by Lorraine & Gemma from Formula Botanica

In this session, we discuss the biggest challenges to starting your own skincare business and try to brainstorm some solutions together for small-scale skincare artisans. 

14:30 – Guest Speaker – Akua Wood, Owner of Sheabutter Cottage

Akua works with fair trade cooperatives throughout Africa to source the exotic oils, butters and cosmetic ingredients which she sells through Sheabutter Cottage. She also sells her own skincare brand Cioccolatina. Followed by Q&A.

15:30 – Refreshments

15:45 – Ingredients Workshop – hosted by Lorraine & Gemma from Formula Botanica

In this fun group workshop, we work in teams to try out a range of different organic carrier oils and work out the best combination for a skincare product. 

16:30 – End of Day 1 

Opportunity to network with other delegates and purchase products from our guest speakers. 

19:00 – Conference Dinner

Formula Botanica invites all delegates and speakers to attend a dinner at a restaurant in Bath.

Day 2

08:45 – Departure for Field Trip

We will all gather at a central location to be collected for our day’s trip to the Organic Herb Trading Company in Milverton, Somerset, UK.

11:00 – Arrive at Organic Herb Trading Company

Welcome on site at the Organic Herb Trading Company, a fabulous manufacturer and supplier of organic herbal ingredients. We will be personally welcomed by their Owner and Manager Mike Brook, who will give us an exclusive tour of their facilities and 2-acre herb farm. Light refreshments provided. 

13:30 – Departure from Organic Herb Trading Company

Transport will be provided back to Bath Spa University.

15:30 – End of Conference

Arrival back at Bath Spa University.


 

Conference Registration Details

Want to register for Formula Botanica’s first-ever conference for students and graduates? All you need to do is enrol for any of our courses and you will be eligible to join in with the conference. We only have 50 seats available so you’ll need to be fast if you want to join in! Registration closes on the 12th of August 2015.
